Robert Bartlett of Plymouth Colony

Tradition has it that the Bartlett family was founded by Adam Barttelot who was esquire to Guido de Brionne. De Brionne (or de Bryan) came from the Liseux district of Normandy to England with William the Conqueror.

Mary Warren and Robert Bartlett came to America on the Ann in 1623. Mary was the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth (Walker) Warren. Richard had come to the colony on the Mayflower three years earlier.

After marrying in 1628, the Bartletts built their home south of the Warren farm between the Eel River and the Pine Hills. Robert described himself as a cooper or wine cooper in several deeds that he signed.

In the division of land on 22 May 1627 Robert received one acre near the Eel River. In the division of cattle at the same time Robert and twelve others drew the tenth lot which was a "heyfer of last yeare called the white belyd heyfer and two shee goats".

In October 1652, Robert petitioned the court to confirm his ownership of lands "bestowed on him by his Mother-in-law Mrs. Elizabeth Warren in Marriage with her Daughter...". The court upheld his rightful ownership.

Robert occasionally served as a member of the grand jury and frequently on trial juries. He also served several terms as surveyor of highways.

On 19 Sep 1676, Robert made a nuncupative will. The will was probated 29 Oct 1676 so he had died sometime between these two dates.

According to the General Register of the Society of Colonial Wars 1899-1902, Robert served in Captain Myles Standish's Company in 1632.

On 14/24 Jul 1673 Robert Bartlett deeded to Joseph his house, the land upon which it stood and other properties with the condition that he did not take possession until after the death of Robert and his wife. In July 1678, Joseph's father in-law, Thomas Pope, sold Joseph some land for £4, 10 shillings. In the deed Joseph is referred to as a wine cooper. Joseph also served on a jury that, on 6 March 1676, returned a verdict of "suspisious of the murder Charge on them" against two Indians that had been tried for the murder of three colonists. On 30 June 1684 Joseph and his wife sold 40 acres for "40 pieces of current silver money of New England" to Ephraim Morton.

On 13 June 1694 Joseph signed a covenant to free his slave Tobey if he behaved well for twelve years of servitude. This covenant may have been made at the time of Tobey's purchase. It is also possible that it was made by his son as both were alive at the time.

The birth, death, and marriage dates for Sylvanus and his wife and the names and birth dates of their children are from Plymouth Vital Records.

Sylvanus was very active in Plymouth government. His name appears many times in the Records of the Town of Plymoth 1743 to 1783: Volume III, 1903. He served as Surveyor of Lumber, Horgreeve, Tytheingman, Packer of Fish(inspector), Selectman, Assessor, Surveyor of Highway, Clerk of the Market, Fence Viewer, Field Walker, warden, and later in life moderator (chairman) pro tem of the town meeting. He did, however, refuse to serve as Constable, for which he paid a fine

The records also show that Sylvanus purchased several pieces of land. The first was on 1 March 1756 for sixteen pounds. It was located at "Wellingsley, Upon which the fishing Flakes of Deacon Joseph Bartlett Now stands...". At a town meeting on 27 September 1756, the sale of a water front lot to Sylvanus and Thomas Davis, traders was approved and on 28 December 1761, the town board approved the sale of some land to Sylvanus adjoining land he already owned on the south side of Fort Hill.

When his father died in 1756, he inherited the "Warren Lott at Monument Ponds in Plymouth which I purchase of my brother Benjamin Bartlett, Elnathan Bartlett & Phebe Barnes at several times; two thirds of Point Pasture, Sedge Ground near Beef Hill & cedar swamp in Plympton which I purchased of John Carver; also half lot bought of Isaac & Sarah Little near Sacrifice Brook in Plymouth".

When Plymouth formed a committee of correspondence on 11 March 1766, Sylvanus was one of the thirteen members. He was selected again on 24 March 1777 and 16 March 1778. He was also on a committee that reviewed the new state constitution on behalf of the town.

The marriage date and spouse's name are from the Plymouth Vital Records, but it is not certain that this is the right Francis. It was the only one to be found, however. The same holds true for the parents of Anna. Francis moved to Hocking County, Ohio between 1810 and 1820 as he appears in 1810 Plymouth County, Massachusetts census and in the 1820 census for Hocking county. He may have come with his brother Jesse around 1816.

Jesse's marriage dates and spouses' names are from Plymouth Vital Records. Jesse is described as a tanner in a 1797 deed.

Unlike the younger generations of most American families of the time, the Bartletts hadn't migrated west. Jesse's ancestors had lived in Plymouth, Massachusetts for almost 200 years before he decided to move to Ohio. However, his move may not have been by choice. In February 1815 peace was announced between England and the United States bringing an end to the War of 1812. This resulted in a huge backlog of English manufactures being dumped in the U.S. which, in turn, destroyed the New England industry that had thrived during the war. The lack of jobs caused many residents of the area to migrate westwards. Jesse is thought to have moved in 1816 which would have been about when the economy of New England was at its lowest. At the latest, he would have to have left by early 1819 as he appears in the 1820 census for Falls Township in Hocking County.

In 1829, he became one of the founding members of the First Presbyterian church in Hocking County. Jesse and his second wife Mary are buried at the Webb Summit Cemetery, east of Logan, Ohio. In a bill of sale for Jesse's estate dated 25 January 1848, the following people are some of the people listed as purchasers of various items: Jesse Bartlett, Jerome Bartlett, Solomon Finney, N. R. England, and Henry Griffin. Solomon Finney was married the Catherine Bartlett above.

Sylvanus appears in the 1840 census for Starr Township in Hocking County, Ohio. A petition to sell the land of the deceased Sylvanus appears in the Vinton County, Ohio Common Plea Court Records on 13 August 1850. It mentions his wife Amanda and their six children.
