Coats' Homes
These are photographs of the old Coats ranch at 6500 Highland Road, Pleasanton, California. It was last owned by Bethel and Phoebe Coats. He took the ranch over from his father. Bethel's father, Felix, had his own property as shown below. Highland Road is just behind the barn.
Coats' Ranch
There are number photos of family visiting the ranch. Bethel would often take the kids for horseback rides or a sled ride in this case.
The following photographs were taken in 2007. Most or all of the buildings collapsed in the 1960's. Highland Road is just behind the tree line
The ranch from the hillside. The only signs of the buildings are near the Smoke tree (light red and green color) near the center of the frame. The property extended beyond the hills in the back ground and behind the point from which the photograph was taken. The original well is still in use. The photo was taken in 2007. Since then, a new house had been built over the foundations of the old one.
This is the site from the road at the present entrance to the property. Berta remembered Bethel Coats building swings from the trees on the hill in the right.
The one recognizable sign of the ranch structure is this pond that Phoebe Coats built for the ducks. The Smoke tree is just to the left of it.
Felix Coats Home
The description on the back of this photo described this as Felix Coats home. It was built around 1882 in Tassajara. It was eventually sold to Carson & Lynch and torn down around 1945. The 1910 census lists Felix as living at Sycamore and Tasajara Road.
This is also described as Felix Coats' home on the back of the original photo. The two buildings don't appear to be one in the same.
